April Ross
April Ross was one of just a handful of women beach volleyball stars who won medals during several Olympics. Alix-Klineman is set to compete alongside April Ross in Tokyo for her third gold medal over the coming days. More than that though Ross is aiming to capture her first Olympic gold. At 39, this could be Ross' last chance to take home the gold medal at an Olympics. The athlete is optimistic she'll be successful in achieving top honours. Ross, via NBC Boston, said that when the team performs very well, or even at all, they could win a gold. "I'm planning to test a little luck." Ross was born in Costa Mesa, California in 1982. Her parents as well as her sister resided in the area. Ross's athletic endeavors continued at Newport Harbor High School where she was a part of a number of activities. Her prep athletic career included indoor volleyball as well as basketball, track and running. She clearly was the top player in indoor volleyball. In her college profile, she was an outside hitter middle blocker and setter throughout her volleyball time at high school. The results of her efforts were acknowledged in 1999 when she was named Gatorade's Circle Of Champions National Players of the Year. In 2000, she won her the Orange County Athlete of the Year award in volleyball. Ross and Klineman have been continuing to play in 2017. The reality is that Ross was an important player in the beach volleyball scene before the pairing. She's won big tournaments twice with different partners. The other is an icon in the volleyball world. She teamed up together with Jennifer Kessy from 2007-2013, and also was Klineman's personal trainer. Kessy was Ross's partner on the World Championships in 2009. They won a Silver Medal in the 2012 Olympic Games held in London. The Misty Maytreanor legendary team as well as Kerri Jennings were the winners of gold. Ross Jennings replaced May-Treanor when she announced her retirement. The pair were able to win the bronze medal in beach volleyball in the Rio Olympics in 2016. Ross was a college athlete at USC Trojans prior to beginning starting her professional career. She played in high school, and even before hitting the beach professionally. Her time at USC was impressive. In 2000, she was named Pac-10 Freshman and NCAA Freshman of the Year and an All-American. She was also a key player to help the Trojans make the Final Four. She suffered a devastating personal loss in her sophomore season, but she still repeated as an All-American. During her final two seasons as a member of the Trojans' program they won success by winning two the national title in consecutive years. She was a great player on the court, and was awarded the Honda Sports Award in 2003-04 as the top female college volleyball player. Ross majored in International Relations at USC. Margie Ross, Ross' mother, did not have the chance to watch her daughter become an international beach volleyball star. Ross's mother died of cancer of the breast in 2001. Ross had just become a second-year student at USC. She has kept her parents close to her the heart. Margie remains a source of inspiration, both off and on of the beach.
